Isle of Arran Distillers is one of the few remaining independent distilleries in Scotland. Based at Lochranza on the Isle of Arran, one of the most beautiful and famous in Scotland which lies off the West Coast between Ayrshire and Kintyre.

Arran 12 Year Old Cask StrengthArran is a unique island known as 'Scotland in Miniature', for it has all of the scenery of Scotland, with mountains and lowlands, glens, lochs and royal castles (including one at Lochranza). Early in the 19th century there were more than 50 whisky distilleries on Arran, most of them illegal and carefully hidden from the eyes of the taxmen. The malt from Arran was shipped to the mainland and enjoyed by the gentry who regularly "took the Arran waters". It was acclaimed at the time as the best in Scotland, only rivalled by those from the 'Glen of Livet'.

This 12 year old cask strength whisky is non-chill filtered and has no added colouring making it a totallly natural and true whisky.

From Master of Malt:

Nose: A fruits character of peaches and nectarines rise of the source of the whisky with a tinge of classic Arran apricot to follow.

Palate: The palate is spicy with the fresh fruit from the nose becoming denser and tangier.

Finish: The finish is long and spicy with nutmeg and orange zest on the tail-end.

Overall: A really fruity showing from Arran with all the spice you could want.

Glengoyne was originally named Burnfoot distillery and probably operated illegally in the early part of the nineteenth century. Its first licence to distil whisky was granted in 1833, and it was renamed "Glen Guin", or "the valley of the wild geese", when Lang Brothers bought it in 1876. While there has been some modernization over the years, it retains a delightful nineteenth-century charm. It nestles prettily in a wooded valley below Dumgoyne hill, from which the Glengoyne Burn courses through sandstone and over a spectacular 15 metre (49 feet) waterfall, eventually flowing into Loch Lomond.

Glengoyne Cask Strength Batch 2Glengoyne distillery draws its soft process water from Loch Carron and its cooling water from the Glengoyne Burn. It uses only Scottish barley, Golden Promise and Chariot varieties, air dried after germination and hence un-peated. The carton boldly states "Scotland's Unpeated Malt" which is the whisky's signature, and it is designated the "Authentic Taste of Malt Whisky Untainted by Peat Smoke."

The distillery operates a medium-sized copper domed mash tun, 6 Oregon pine washbacks, 1 wash still and 2 smaller spirit stills with boil balls in the necks and level lyne arms. The size and shape of the spirit stills and boil balls contribute greatly through catalysis and reflux to the flavour of the resulting spirit. The whisky is matured in a combination of refill bourbon and sherry casks, in dunnage warehouses at the site.

The whisky is used in blends such as Cutty Sark, Famous Grouse and Lang's Supreme.

Or so the Glengoyne web site says, they go on...

Digestive biscuits, ripe bananas and a hint of pepper. This is the taste of Scotland's slowest distillation, bottled as tradition insists: at cask strength, un-chillfiltered. Like every Glengoyne, the amber hue is created by time and oak, nothing more.

Nose: Fresh strawberries and cream, crumbled digestive biscuits and a hint of oak spice.

Palate: Treacle-like, sweet and thick. Sharp fruits with sugar syrup and more oaty biscuits.

Finish: A long, lasting finish.

Blues Rags & Hollers

We have stunning acoustic and unplugged blues music here on the first Thursday of the month with Graham Bellinger, Terry 'The Bear' Burgin and friends.

Graham, Terry and friends will bring you a selection of Blues in the style of that 1960s American country blues trio Koerner, Ray and Glover, this night gets its name from their classic first album "Blues, Rags & Hollers."  Like them we'll be approaching their traditional material with a mixture of reverence and fun!

There is no entry charge although there will be a raffle towards expenses for the chaps. Come and join us for an evening of first class entertainment.

Bruichladdich

A late release and last chance to try from the Bruichladdich distillery a light single malt. The name Waves suggests the notes of crisp, fresh fruits and a touch of light spice with a touch of typical 'Laddie coastal tones.  Perhaps the Islay for those who think they don't like Islay?

Waves, a young version of Bruichladdich, was an accident. It started life destined exclusively for the Italian market, it was never intended as a strand alone bottling, and was ultimately incorporated in to the trilogy of bottlings along side Rocks (unpeated) and Peat (clearly peated) as a half-way house between the two.

Waves is to be discontinued from Summer 2012.  Tasting from Master Blender Jim McEwan on Bruichladdich Wave from the stillhouse of the Islay Distillery here.

Nose: Light, fresh. Perfumed, stemmy, floral. Dry grass, apples, slightly coastal.
Palate:
Medium body, balanced. Dried seaweed, sweet barley, toffee, vanilla, honey freshly sliced oranges, fruit salad, a touch of smoke - a lot going on!
Finish:
Long, fruity and spiced.

altWith the distillery established in1828, Springbank Ten is distilled at J & A Mitchell & Co in Campbeltown and is a Speyside whisky. Springbank Ten is matured for over ten years in quite rare distillery where every part of the process from malting to bottling is carried out at the distillery.  This single malt whisky is matured in a mixture of both bourbon and sherry casks and is not chill-filtered which means it's also free from artificial colouring.

Whilst bourbon casks are mainly used for maturation, allowing the distillery character to shine through, a number of sherry casks are also used for added body. The light colour of this malt belies the richness of its character. Whilst the nose suggests a wide range of aromas, from citrus fruits to pears and a hint of peat, the palate excites even further with touches of smoke, vanilla essence, nutmeg, cinnamon and the salty tang we have come to expect from Springbank. (Distillery Notes) "Gold color, fresh sea breeze aroma, with vanilla and delicately soft fruit. Medium body. Appetizing, exciting flavors of vanilla, toffee, brine and subtle note of coconut and spearmint. Long teasing finish." - The Malt Advocate.

Established in 1828 on the site of Archibald Mitchell's illicit still, it is the oldest independent family owned distillery in Scotland. The Springbank Distillery is now in the hands of his great great great grand son, Hedley G. Wright.

The distillery actually produces 3 different malts Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn. Springbank is distilled two and a half times. The malt is dried for only 6 hours above a peat fire, then for 24 hours by warm air. The result is a less peaty malt than your normal Campbeltown malt. Springbank is one of just two distilleries that bottle their whiskies at the source, using the original water for the reduction to bottling strength (when they reduce at all). Glenfiddich is the only other.

Every drop of whisky made at Springbank is sold as single malt. It is bottled at many different ages, and with many different finishes. It is quite a unique whisky from a unique distillery.
